Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly book meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
This Week’s Topic : Ten Characters You Love But Others Hate or Vice Versa
I’m tossing in the towel guys. So far I’ve gotten through every one of my TTT’s being able to list at least ten things.
Today I can’t. I just can’t.
Nevermind the insanely busy weekend, a massive business analytics paper, and the 7 Curling draws I have this week. Even if my time was free and clear I probably couldn’t hit ten on this. I’m too conventional when it comes to characters I guess. But I have two that I’m apparently a weirdo about, two that immediately come to mind when given this prompt.
Here be some Westerosi Spoilers ya’ll. So If you’re not up to date on the Game of Thrones television series or the Song of Ice and Fire book series, the fact that I refer to either of these people as currently alive might ruin things for you, maybe?
Character I Get a Kick Out Of that People Hate : Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish. The dude is probably definitely an undiagnosed sociopath. And he’s absolutely a shitty human being. But you know what? He’s playing the game to win, and so far it’s working out. And it’s fascinating as hell.
Keep in mind I prefer the books to the show, and there are some major narrative divergences with him between the two, but either way he plots, he schemes, he screws shit up for other people, and so far he’s come out doing quite well for himself. He’s made incredibly smart choices and I have no idea what his plan is next, or what his real deal is. He’ll never get a PoV chapter, since it would probably give away everything, but anytime he pops up I’m all about it. This guy is a crafty son of a bitch and his machinations are like fucked up works of art. For now at least. We still have a few seasons and books to go, and I’m sure he’ll meet some terrible end for being a vile little shit, but for now I have to respect the architect of destruction.
Character I Want to Fall Off a Cliff that People Love : Daenerys “Insert Long, Stupid Title Here” Targaryen. I’m probably clouded some, because I read the books long before the show existed, and she’s much younger, and far more stupid in the books.
But… well… that sort of said it all. She’s stupid. She’s entitled. She basically has one thing (or three I guess?) going for her and she can barely control that. She acts like she owns a freaking continent she’s never really lived on (because apparently rule by conquest doesn’t exist?), she craps on her advisers, and makes more wrong choices than I can count. I laughed my ass off at the end of A Dance with Dragons, and I sort of wish she’d stay in that predicament forever. Obnoxiously she’ll probably come out ahead in the end for being a “good person” or whatever, despite the obvious familiar twinges of madness that have been popping up. She plays the game like an idiot. Ugh.
So there you go readers. The two characters that I’m apparently a giant weirdo for liking and not-liking. I’m consistent with the overarching cultural opinion on just about everyone else I suppose. So who are you a fan of? And are you counting down the days until season 6?
I’m with you for Petyr Baelish. He’s fabulous. I can’t wait to see who comes out top in the battle of wits between him and Varys. Assuming they’re not on the same side. I can’t tell with Petyr, it’s why I like him so much 🙂

Glad im not a total weirdo. It’ll be an interesting ending (or endings? Not sure how different the show will go) for sure!

I actually like Petyr Baelish. Danerys, not so much.

Yeah I’ve had a few that I really had to stretch on, but this time I just had no mental effort to give.

DUDE. I love Littlefinger. To be fair, I have only read the first two books and seen the first two seasons of the show, and I have had some spoilers that make me question this love for him. But still, I really like his character. As awful a human being as he is, I love how clever and ahead of the game he is. And how catty he is in the show, it’s just fun to watch him come to life.

Oooh you’re not even at some of his most rediculous schemes yet!

Petyr Baelish is definitely a fascinating character. I hate him, but I love hating him. I relish his awfulness, his scheming, and his general only-look-out-for-number-one-attitude. That probably says something very bad about me. And while I love Daenerys, she definitely is not my favorite female character (that goes to Arya, for sure). What I love about the Mother of Dragons is that yes, she makes a lot of dumb decisions, but she has so much conviction and she acts like a queen. She’s an entitled little piece of crap (she was raised to be that way), but she adds a whole other element to the series and brings the action and conflict outside Westeros. I like the historic claim that she has, and of course, the dragons are amazing. Probably more than half of the love I have for her can be directly attributed to those dragons!

I think a lot of my dislike is that I never really cared a whole lot for anything happening outside of Westeros either way. Martin writes so many characters and locations that jumping across the sea to check in with a girl who hasn’t done a whole lot just made things feel extra slow, and took away from the fascinating mess going on elsewhere. That and I started reading these ages ago, and basically waited like 9 years for her to actually do something in the books, which underwhelmed. The Dragons are sweet though, and I’m curious to see what goes on now that we have multiple major characters on Essos too!

I love Petyr too! His character is so crafty and manipulative and I love it! And I agree with Dany. I liked her at first but the further into the books I got the less I liked her.
