This Week’s Topic : Books You Love that You Haven’t Talked About in a While
I’ve only been book blogging for a few months now… actually no, scratch that. I had a stint doing reviews of exclusively animal related non-fiction a while back, but we’ll just ignore that.
Anyway, though I’ve only been writing about books for a few months, I’ve been reading them as a primary hobby for nearly my entire life. So for today’s TTT we’re going to look at some of the fiction titles that I’ve read in the past two years that would’ve done very well on my ratings system… if this blog had existed at the time.
- The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood : After I read this for the first time all I wanted to do was talk about it and read more about it, and curl up in a corner and cry.
- Neuromancer by William Gibson : The novel that essentially created Cyberpunk, and spawned words and concepts that we today take for granted.
- Uprooted by Naomi Novik : An inventive fantasy entrenched in Eastern European traditions and tales. I need to read more of that world.
- Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel : A dystopian future, a comic book, Shakespeare, and the will to survive.
- Ready Player One by Ernest Cline : A explosion of fun if you were a kid who lived and breathed games and the culture surrounding them.
- A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness : I never expected to enjoy a supernatural romance novel, but this first book surprised me. The sequels… not so much.
- The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas : I recommend this book more than any other title. It has literally everything.
- The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle : A gorgeously stunning world and what it means to be immortal.
- American Gods by Neil Gaiman : A contemporary fusion of myths and modern fantasy, one of my all time favorites.
- Wool by Hugh Howey : Another post-apocalyptic future, where humanity’s remnant live underground, shielded from everything.
The Laurenest 
Some interesting choices. I wasn’t a fan of the first wool book for some reason, so never picked up the rest of them. Here’s my TTT

I’d say the first might even be the weakest. Once the whole conspiracy unravels it gets crazy!

I started reading The Count of Monte Cristo but had to put it on pause because I got ill and couldn’t focus on reading! I definitely need to return to it though! And I adore Uprooted!

Ready Player One is on my TTT too! I loved that book and as a child gamer, 100% agree that it was an explosion of fun. 🙂

I’ve never read The Last Unicorn, but I’m guessing it’s the same as the movie? I used to love the movie as a kid. I actually bought it for my daughter recently. It’s pretty trippy watching it now!

It’s very similar, but way more… sad? Philosophical? I can’t really think of the right word, but it’s very good!

Nice picks for this week! I have read The Handmaid’s Tale and enjoyed it a lot. Margaret Atwood is one of my favorite writers.

In my early, early days of blogging, I tried so hard to write something about American Gods and wrote along the lines ‘I don’t get the whole point of everything.’ I really need to re-read that one badly.

Great picks – you seem to have picked only books I loved or books sat on my shelf waiting for me to pick them up 🙂 I’d really like to make time to revisit The Handmaid’s Tale (which I haven’t read since school) and Neuromancer (same but uni) – I have really strong impressions of what they were like, but it’s been such a long time that I’m not sure how accurate those memories are. I suspect I’ll finally get to Wool and Ready Player One first though (definitely want to see that before the film comes out).
