When you finish Infinite Jest after a 3 month read-a-long, you take a break on monstrous books for a while, right?
Haha no.
There is apparently something very wrong with me.
Because now begins the War and Peace read-through!
The Copy : War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy, Richard Pevear and Larissa Volokhonsky (Translators)
The Tools : 8 colors of post-it flag and three highlighters.
The Schedule :
- Book I – Parts 1-3 – May 1-21
- Book II – Parts 4-8 – May 22-June 11
- Book III – Parts 9-11 – June 12-July 2
- Book IV – Parts 12-Epilogue – July 3-31
We’re going with this schedule for now, which seems doable based on my past explorations into Russian Literature, but there may be some tweaking as we go.
The Reason : Because it’s there. And because it’s one of the top books that people lie about reading. In the U.K. Anyway, which actually doesn’t apply to me since I’m in the States, but you get what I mean. (Who would lie about reading 50 Shades of Grey?)
The Invitation : I’m reading along with people from real life, but if any other loon out there on the interscape wants on in this, I can promise comment thread feedback and input! If not, no sweat… it’s short notice. I’ll accept any encouragement I can get though!
I admire you all for your courage. It’s a mountain of a book. A friend of mine, who is Russian and studied Russian literature, once told me, “The peace parts are wonderful. A fascinating family saga. But then you have all the war parts. Ugh!”. I’ll be watching out for your updates 🙂

Nice! I have this edition on my TBR shelf…I’m thinking about tackling it sometime this year, but am probably going to wait until winter 🙂

Good luck! I’ll be cheering you on from as far away from that book as possible. 🙂

This has been on my list for a while, but ever since I finished Anna Karenina…..I just need a break from Tolstoy. Good luck! I hope you enjoy it 🙂
