The Academy Award nominations dropped about 2 hours ago and though we’ll be going into far more detail about each category over here at The Laurenest, here are just a few initial reactions.
- #OscarsSoWhite no more! Hopefully! This is one of the most diverse groups of actors and films I’ve seen recognized in recent memory. I’m especially happy to see Octavia Spencer listed for supporting actress. She was wonderful in Hidden Figures.
- I’m pleased to see an original screenplay nomination for The Lobster. It’s one of the most unique movies I’ve ever seen, and deserves it.
- Amy Adams, poor Amy Adams. I think everyone had her as a lock for Actress in Arrival. Hell, even the Oscars Mobile Site listed her. Whoops.
- I love Meryl. I do. But can we stop nominating her for everything she appears in? Florence Foster Jenkins, really?
- 14 Nominations for La La Land. This ties the record for most nominations, along with Titanic and All About Eve. It would need to take 12 of those to beat the record for wins….
- Which I doubt will happen. The actors alone are outclassed. The screenplay isn’t anything special, and some of the technical categories should go to other films.
- Moonlight received 8 nominations, all of them very much deserved.
- Mel Gibson for best director. Has Hollywood forgiven him for being a cranky asshole?
- I want a Lin-Manuel Miranda EGOT so bad, but I don’t think this will be his year. La La Land has two “Best Songs” and should win for one of them.
- No Deadpool anywhere, which is really unfortunate in light of Suicide Squad picking up a nomination. Yeah. Academy Award Nominated…. Suicide Squad. Yuck.
- Finally, there are 62 unique films nominated this year, up from 57 in 2016. We’ve got a lot of watching to do!
I think even Meryl would tell them to give her nomination to Amy Adams! Let’s face it, Streep has more than enough nominations.
And I can’t believe Suicide Squad got nominated when Deadpool gets nothing 😦

There is always some random film that gets a technical nomination (50 Shades of Grey got one last year….). But Deadpool had some solid makeup work too, and was actually a watchable film 😦

I was hoping for a nomination for The Witch or The Handmaiden (which was very very unlikely anyway), but still, these are the two best films I’ve seen this year and was rooting for them. Costume or soundtrack would have been good 🙂 I’ve only seen half of the best pic nominees so yeah definitely a lot to catch up on! And you’re so right, Amy Adams was snubbed big time.
Nice thoughts!

I forgot about The Witch! The ambiance and editing was so good in that one, but its such a pain for genre films to get recognition 😦

Arghh, but it was so good though. I thought it transcended the horror genre into something a socio-religious allegory with psychological elements. I’m excited to see your best movies of the year if you’ll be doing a post on that!
