WWW Wednesday is a book meme run by Taking on a World of Words.
Each week we’re asked three questions –
- What are you currently reading?
- What did you recently finish reading?
- What do you think you’ll read next?
What are you currently reading?
I was sleepy on Saturday and ended up watching Far From the Madding Crowd on HBO, because I will watch Carey Mulligan in anything. Once it ended I realized I had not read that book, nor anything else by Thomas Hardy, and I had Tess of the d’Urbervilles on my Kindle already (thanks out of copyright e-books!) so I’ve been digging into that very unexpectedly.
I’m also working my way through Wolf Hall and enjoying it a lot. I think I’ve also convinced a family member to pick it up as well, so yay itty-bitty book clubs!
What did you recently finish reading?
I finished three things, though all very short things.
First up was Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates, which was phenomenal to the point that I probably rambled too much about how I loved it in my review, which you can read right here.
Second was Nick Offerman’s Paddle Your Own Canoe, which I enjoyed far less than the former title, and less than I had hoped to, but was still something you may want to pick up. Review for that is also up now.
Finally I just completed Will Eisner’s A Contract With God, the first “graphic novel.” Due to that title it has a pretty interesting format, and is definitely not for kids you weirdos who think comic strips are juvenile. A stink eye to you! Review for that soon.
What do you think you’ll read next?
I should be able to finish Tess this week, so I’ll be starting up Frankenstein in the next couple of days.
I’m also taking part in Infinite Winter, a structured read-through of Infinite Jest, which starts on Sunday. I’ve tried to tackle that book twice now alone, so I’m excited to work through it with a support system. It’s only 75 pages a week, so it’ll be on my “currently reading” booklist for a while, but I’m super pumped. You should join too! Everyone should join!
I’m so glad you’re enjoying Wolf Hall and spreading the word about how great it is. It and Bring Up the Bodies are tremendous.
I hope you enjoy Frankenstein. It’s very dark and brooding, so not everyone’s cup of tea. I think it’s great! Perhaps not the best to read after Hardy though… perhaps too much darkness?

Yeah I’m slightly worried about the sheer levels of depression and most of these; I’ll just have to weave in some happier fare!

I quite like Thomas Hardy but haven’t read any in a while. What I remember about Tess is that it was a really good book but kind of depressing. She’s such a tragic character who just seems to have horrendous luck. I should really do a re read soon.
How was the film? Quite fancy it but haven’t seen it yet.

Yeah that girl just gets one awful blow after another 😦 The movie was good. It moved a little fast to dig well into motivations, but it was gorgeous and the acting was well done.

The cast definitely appealed 🙂

I don’t understand – too many books? Do some people actually feel like they have too many books? You can never have too many books!
I had no idea that Nick Offerman had written a book, never mind two, but I love the man so I may have to check them out!

If my bookshelves could talk they’d probably complain about the weight 🙂 I haven’t read Offerman’s other book yet, which I hear is about historical figures. I gotta get through so much other stuff first!

I know the problem (? no, wait, that’s not right) of having a lot of books to read. My bookshelf would probably moan as well. I know I need to tidy it and sort it but I can’t bring myself to give books away.

I read Frankenstein last year, and it was great to finally read the original story behind all those adaptions. I hope you enjoy your reads this week! 🙂
Happy reading! Here’s my WWW.

At the moment I am reading Papillon by Henri Charriere. Pretty good so far. Not sure about next…maybe a first attempt at Dickens.

I survived Great Expectations when I was a teenager, and I haven’t been compelled to go back to his writings… yet…

Sounds like Dickens may be a challenge…he can’t be worse than Shakespeare can he?

Shakespeare is at least shorter… usually…

My mom is Shakespeare obsessed, so I read so. many. plays. Now I’d rather just go see them- better experience at least!

Forgive me if I appear a heathen when I say this…but I really hate Shakespeare plays. I almost fell asleep during one live performance. I think you feel like you have to like them but I always feel that it could be so much shorter…so therefore Dickens may be a bad idea! 😃

No worries! They are definitely not for everyone, and I’m sure these days more people than not are in the “dislike” camp, especially since it gets so shoved down our throats in school.
I’ve also seen performances that were total stinkers, on top of really amazing ones. Both the delivery and the scripts themselves can be really inconsistent as far as enjoyment goes.

Good points well made there. Good actors can convey meaning without need of words. I saw Derek Jacobi in The Tempest once which was perhaps a case in point.

Dang, you’re zooming through books! Happy it was a good week AND you got a lazy day AND you even completed a book from a new genre (or would it be format for the graphic novel?). I love these kinds of week.
What is your system? Setting a number of pages to read a week? Or? Just being nosy. I tend to feel too confined by schedules personally.
Happy Wednesday!

My system is essentially based around when I’ll be busy, and that’s about it. January was a very open month for me, so I was able to get through a lot. It also helped that that class I was taking was really easy (for me at least) so I had more time to read.
February my page count will be much lower, just because I’m gone 3 of the weekends on top of taking a more time consuming class.
I don’t really have set goals, just a drive to get as much covered when I have the chance. (I also have issues sleeping, so I get more done during those sleepless bouts… until they go on so long that my brain shuts entirely… which might be happening soon)

Oh that makes sense. I’m hoping your brain stays on (Unless off helps you sleep). Good luck in February!

I liked Offerman in ‘Parks and Rec,’ but I listened to his comedy special and it wasn’t for me. I’m guessing his book is similar to his stand-up. Darn. Happy reading and thanks for participating in WWW Wednesday!

Yeah I would say pass on his book if you weren’t a fan of his comedy special. Lots of the same material.
